Hey all! Which program do you use and on which phone? Give us a review and share your experience. Is the cost worth it? Thanks!

Hi. I have got a nokia 6630 and i use a demo of talks with it. I am happy with it.
You can use the phone very indipendently. You can send texts, save phones in your phonebook and dial them, change the time, date etc and much more.
I didn't try mobile speak but i heard that talks is better.

Thank you. I guess I should add another question. Where did you get your phone from? Most of the phones listed on either program's website, aren't available through the cell providers.

I have a Nokia 6682, and I use Talks. I got my phone through the Cingular store in the mall near where I live, but I think you can get it a lot cheaper through Amazon.com or something. I've got the full version of Talks, and I really like it. You can manage your contact list, send and receive text messages, and do pretty much anything with your phone that a sighted person can do with theirs. I did try a demo of Mobile Speak, but for some reason, it kept crashing my phone. So I never really got to see how it functioned.

I use mobile Speak on my phone, and I have some similar crashing problems, though whether it's do to mobile speak or the fact that5 I'm using an older phone I don't too.
I find it vary accessible but I couldn't tell you whether it's better than talks, though I have heard that it is.

Talks with 6620 works pretty well. I'm having issues browsing the net but it could be either due to my phone being old or me not having latest version of Talks. I've heard 6682 is much better and I could upgrade my Talks considerably for a small fee, but why bother, it works for everything I want it to do. I've had 2 or 3 instances where Talks crashed so that I had to remove the battery from the back of the phone and reinsert it, turn the phone on. That solved my issues every time and Talks came up normal. In a year's worth of usage I surely have no complaints. It wasn't particularly cheap but I find the independence of managin my contacts and caller IDs etc, worth it.
Cheers

Here's my story.

I got a Nokia 3650 from T-Mobile, along with a plan. Then I bought Talks from www.beyondsight.com. I also had a Bluetooth dongle, so I was able to install Talks myself, which for some reason, baffled the folks at Beyond Sight. Anyways, I've had for 3 or more years, and it works great!

I've also used Mobile Speak, just to see how it compared with Talks. Two bad things come to mind when I think about my experience with that piece of software.

1. Don't press keys too fast or the whole damn thing will freeze up, and you'll have to nock the battery out of the phone and restart it.

2. While on the phone with someone, performing a Mobile Speak command like checking the time or something to do with pressing the numbers results in the other end hearing the touch tones. Talks successfully suppresses this. I do like the DECTalk voice, and wish Talks could use it like Mobile Speak does.

Hi folks. For a while, i used a demo of talks on my nokia 6600. As Nikos and others have said, it works fine. Although i find it much better not to have to restart after ten minutes, but there we have the same with jaws demos and authorised versions. I believe that talks versus mobile speak comes to jaws versus window eyes. many crashing problems have been reported to me with mobile speak indeed, and, agreed with the post about decktalk, i like it too. oh, one other thing. For talks, i do not recommend the installation of real speech. The sound is not good quality and it uses much power. Cheers. John

I agree. I tried the real speak male and female voices and they are not as good as eloquence.
It's the best voice for talks.

How is talks so much better then Verizon's LVG 4650 phone?

Post 11 by preciousminny (Veteran Zoner) on Friday, 25-Aug-2006 22:58:43

Hi all. I'm just now getting a demo of talks for my phone. can anyone help me install it? if so, just send me a message. thanks.

Post 12 by smudge (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Sunday, 27-Aug-2006 15:37:46

i have used talks for 3 years, and will be switching to mobile speak shortly. The development on talks has ground to a stop, and for this reason the newly released fones are not supported. code factory has a very agressive development process on mobile speak, and the supoort is great. the sight is updated frequently, and there is far more in the way of online manuals than talks.

Post 13 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Sunday, 27-Aug-2006 16:39:00

Yes i will agree with the above post. The mobile speak website is much better than talks website and there are clear instructions of how to install the programme. I found a txt document on the nuance website explaining how to install talks but it wasn't as clear.
But a lot of users above said about mobile speak crashing so i would buy talks because it never crashed with my phone.
For the user who asked how to install talks you will have to install first your synthesiser file such us eloquence or real speak and after that the talks main file. After the main talks software is installed is going to find the synthesiser and start talking automatically.

Smudge, help me out here! I had heard the reverse that mobilespeak developement for the symbian series phones(nokia) had stopped and talks was a better choice. the newest version permitts surfing the Internet. I do know that they are agressively working on a smartphone version (mobilespeak that is) and I also use mobile speak pocket for the PPDA. Thanks.

Post 15 by frequency (the music man) on Tuesday, 29-Aug-2006 19:02:36

Well, Talks is coming out with a new version that will be supporting the Symbian series60 3rd edition phones like the Nokia E series.

Post 16 by Ezria (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 29-Aug-2006 22:17:02

I am using a nokia 6260 with Mobile Speak. I have not had many crashing problems--maybe two or three times in the last few months. I absolutely love it! I got my phone off of EBay. For anyone who is considering buying a phone, I would encourage you to do your research. I wanted the 6260 because it is one of the smallest phones available that supports speech software. Now I wish i had've went for the Samsung model which is even smaller, but for now i like my Nokia.

Just some advice.
Be careful when buying from ebay.
Some phones might be locked to a network. Also the phone might have additional problems and the owner doesn't say about them.
My girlfriend got a phone from ebay a nokia 6680 and everything works ok appart from the fact that when you make a phone call without the loud speaker the volume is veri quiet.
So obviously the previous owner of the phone didn't say that and he got the 50 pounds for nothing. Now she is looking for another one.
So be careful.

Post 18 by Ezria (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 30-Aug-2006 13:16:08

Thanks for your advice, but I am very careful when I buy from places like that. I make sure I do my research before hand. The phone was unlocked, and I checked into the seller before I purchased it to make sure they had a good rep.

Post 19 by WillieTheWoof (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 30-Aug-2006 19:55:09

I have actually used a brand new6680 and believe it or not it seems like that is the volume you get. I was shocked when I tried it. I couldn't find any volume control and I am sure there has to be one but it was definately too low for me to hear in loud environments. Someone suggested the website www.myworldphone.com. I visited the site and the prices look pretty good. I am considering buying from them since my motorola v551 is giving up the ghost.

Post 20 by preciousminny (Veteran Zoner) on Friday, 01-Sep-2006 22:37:09

what do I need to install the program? I was told that I need an adapter to transfer it to my phone from the computer. what kind of an adapter do I need, and where can I get it?

Post 21 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Saturday, 02-Sep-2006 10:33:58

If your phone has got u s b connectivity you should find a u s b kable with your phone and a cd with the nokia pc suite software.
You have to install the pc suite before connecting your phone on the computer. You can also find it for free on the nokia website www.nokia.com.
Note: If you are going to install it from the cd after inserting the cd don't let it start automatically. Just hold down the shift key for a few seconds and find the software manually with windows explorer or my computer. It is in the software folder.
The autorun programme is not very accessible.
If your phone hasn't got u s b connectivity you can connect it with bluetooth.
I hope it helps.

I was reading the mobile speak manual the other day and it was saying that somebody has to buy a lisence for each language installed on the phone.
I was wondering is it the same with talks or do you just buy the main software and you can install as many languages as you want?
Thanks.
If the languages for talks are free i would say this is one of the disadvantages of mobile speak so i would buy talks.

Post 23 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Monday, 05-Mar-2007 14:29:01

I have neither Talks nor Mobile Speak on my phone, so I can't do much on it. Is there a big price difference in the two programs?

Post 24 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Monday, 05-Mar-2007 14:54:02

I think they both have simmilar prices with talks a bit more expensive but i am not sure about this.

I use Talks premium edition on a Nokia N70 and it's bloody brilliant, lollol. You can use WAP, you can download bog standard multimedia and text messages, you can access nearly all of your phone's features with just three or four keystrokes from Standby mode Etc Etc. I can't sing Talks's praises enough. Mind you, I've never used mobile speak and can't compare Talks with that, but I'm glad I made the right choice for both my Nokia 7610 and the N70, my current phone which is right now, in my pocket.

I recently got a Nokia 6682 with Mobile Speak on it, and I absolutely love it! I haven't had any problems with it crashing or anything. Of course, I've never tried Talks on it, but my best friend says it doesn't work as well on the 6682 as Mobile Speak does because she's tried it. My fiance has a 6260 with Talks on it, and I'm sorry ... maybe I'm too picky or whatever, but I cannot stand the fact that Talks speaks in British English. It's Eloquence in British English and we can't figure out how to change that, or if we can change it at all. I love the fact that Mobile Speak, though it uses Dec Talk, speaks good old American English. It's a lot clearer, in my opinion, and therefore, a lot easier to understand.

And oh yeah, my Nokia 6682 came brand new and unlocked from EBay. Sometimes, if you're patient and look around, you can find it for cheap. Mine was only 80 USD.

You can download American eloquence from www.nuance.com/talks. Choose the download link, choose your phone from the list box and you can download eloquence US English or Real speak US English as well.

hey all. i understand that a new version fo talks came out. Do i ave ot uninstall the old version then install the new version after that? I hope not, but if i do it's ok. let me know what you have done.

Post 30 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Monday, 05-Mar-2007 21:19:29

The new version is only for talks which run the symbian third edition. Other phones don't need any upgrate and i don't think the new version would work on them anyway.
To make sure go to the downloads page, choose your phone and it will tell you what version is available. If i remember right your phone was a nokia comunicator which is different.

Post 31 by frequency (the music man) on Monday, 05-Mar-2007 21:19:30

no need to uninstall. just install over the version on your phone, and it'll ask you if you'd like to overwrite it.

Post 32 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Monday, 05-Mar-2007 22:18:49

ok all. i just found out that the current new version of talks will not work on phone such as the nokia 9300 and thing of that nature.
it's only for things like the n91 and the e series.
there is a version in the works for the comunicator series.
oh yeah, i can't use the web browser on my phone with talks. any ideas as to why? i'd love to be able to use my phone for internet.
thank you all.

I am a user of Mobile Speak pocket for PDA's and actually took the plunge and bought the HTC TyTN. Nice phone with PDA functionality. Gotta have the bluetooth headset as well. So Far I just would like a faster processor but overall it's a nice combo.
